Hi. I was googling something completely superfluous to your blog entry, but couldn't help commenting. Hopefully you'll get this. If not, well, oh well.
What you have found is a salt factory. I'm not entirely sure of the mechanics of the entire process, but some of the eastern and southern edges of the San Fransisco Bay is just like this, and it's a Morton salt factory. In fact, the one on the bay is responsible for ALL salt that Morton produces. So think of it as Bay salt. :)

There is a Morton Salt Factory in Mentor, Ohio (just east of Cleveland. The salt cave are under Lake Erie.
